The Art Room

Welcome to the Art Room

Here you will find class updates, student work, and event information.

The purpose of these classes are to introduce students to the languages, concepts, and practices of art through visual and art historical perspectives. Emphasis is placed on understanding the Elements of Art and Principles of Design as a basis for composition. Students will explore a variety of artists, art processes and materials such as drawing, painting, printmaking, and two & three-dimensional design. Student artwork will reflect aesthetics & cultural and historical contexts. Willingness to get involved in the creative process is a more important requirement than the student’s talent or previous experience.

About Mr. Kohler

I am in my third year of teaching TK-12 Art at Remsen St. Mary's. Before I came to St. Mary's I taught K-8 Art in Jackson, Michigan for one year and 9-12 Art in Oskaloosa, Kansas for three years. I have a BFA from the University of Kansas in Visual Communications-Illustration and a TK-12 Art Education Endorsement from Fort Hays State University.

My favorite thing about teaching Art is helping students find their passion and creativity. Helping them create artwork that they never thought they could make and be proud of is why I teach.

I live in Sioux City, IA with my wife, Alana, and our two dogs, Myrtle and Boris. Some of my favorite hobbies include fishing, hiking, golfing, traveling, spending time at the lake, drawing, ceramics, and woodworking. My favorite food is BBQ brisket. Favorite TV show is HBO's Deadwood and The Wire. Favorite movie is Disney's The Emperor's New Groove.
